Rainbow Heart Crochet Pattern

I’ve been so inspired by the #yarnfriendsrock prompts over on instagram, you should totally go check it out if you haven’t already! For day 23 of the challenge the prompt was “rainbow love”. I’m not usually one for rainbows, so I rummaged through my scraps box and managed to pull together a muted rainbow and decided to design a heart!

The heart ends up a little wavy, but I think it would make a great applique to a blanket – perhaps a grey moss stitch square with a back post half double crochet border to match the heart! Ooo! That would be so cute! I guess that’s being added to my endless list of blanket ideas!

You will need:

• Yarn – I used scraps of aran weight yarn

• A crochet hook – I used a 5.5mm hook

• Scissors

• Yarn needle

• Something to watch or listen to while you crochet!

Stitches you will need to know:

• Magic ring

• Chain

• Single crochet

• Half double crochet

• Double crochet

• Treble crochet

• Working in the back loop

• Back post stitches

Round 1 (red)

Magic loop, chain (ch) 3, 3 treble crochets (tr), 3 double crochets (dc), ch1, tr, ch1, 3dc, 3tr, ch3, slip stitch into the loop. Pull the loop tighter, but not fully closed, you will be working into it on each of the remaining rounds!

Round 2 (red)

Ch3, [sc and half double crochet (hdc)] in the next stitch, 3hdc in next stitch, 2hdc in next stitch, sc in next 4, ch1, dc in the point of the previous round, ch1, sc in next 4, 2hdc in next, 3hdc in next, [hdc and sc] in next stitch, ch3, slst into magic loop of round 1.

Round 3 (yellow)

Join on the point at the bottom of the heart with a standing back post double crochet (bpdc), ch1, half double crochet (hdc) in the back loop (BL) of the chain stitch, back post half double crochet (bphdc) in the next 6 stitches, 2bphdc in each of the next 5 stitches, ch3, slip stitch to the centre of the magic loop of round 1, ch3 2bphdc in the next 5 stitches, bphdc in the next 6 stitches, hdc in BL of chain, ch1, slst to bpdc

Round 4 (green)

Join on the point at the bottom of the heart with a standing bpdc, ch1, hdc in BL of chain , bphdc in the next 8, 2bphdc in each of the next 3, bphdc in the next 3, 2bphdc in the each of the next 3, ch3, slip stitch to the centre of the magic loop of round 1, ch3, 2bphdc in the each of the next 3, bphdc in the next 3, 2bphdc in the next 3 stitches, bphdc in the next 8 stitches, hdc in BL of chain, ch1, slst to bpdc

Round 5 (blue)

Join on the point at the bottom of the heart with a standing bpdc, ch1, hdc in BL of chain , bphdc in the next 10, 2bphdc in each of the next 3, bphdc in the next 8, 2bphdc in the each of the next 3, ch3, slip stitch to the centre of the magic loop of round 1, ch3, 2bphdc in the each of the next 3, bphdc in the next 8, 2bphdc in the next 3 stitches, bphdc in the next 10 stitches, hdc in BL of chain, ch1, slst to bpdc

Round 6 (purple)

Join on the point at the bottom of the heart with a standing bpdc, ch1, hdc in BL of chain , bphdc in the next 12, 2bphdc in each of the next 5, bphdc in the next 8, 2bphdc in the each of the next 3, bphdc in the next 3, ch3, slip stitch to the centre of the magic loop of round 1, ch3, bphdc in the next 3, 2bphdc in the each of the next 3, bphdc in the next 8, 2bphdc in the next 5 stitches, bphdc in the next 12 stitches, hdc in BL of chain, ch1, slst to bpdc

Round 7 (pink)

Join on the point at the bottom of the heart with a standing bpdc, ch1, hdc in BL of chain , bphdc in the next 39, ch4, slip stitch to the centre of the magic loop of round 1, ch4, bphdc in the next 39, hdc in BL of chain, ch1, slst to bpdc
